Sore throat: why it happens and what to do

When a child says, “Mom, my throat hurts,” parents want to understand what is happening, whether they should worry, and what should be done in this situation. Let’s look at why a child may complain about a sore throat and how to respond.

If a child complains about a sore throat, first assess their breathing, temperature, ability to swallow, fluid intake, and overall condition. If you are at home, offer a drink at a comfortable temperature, air out the room, and carefully observe any changes.

Why a child may have a sore throat

There can be several reasons, and not all of them start directly in the throat. Sometimes a child has been running, laughing, shouting on the playground, or singing for a long time. In the evening everything seems fine, but by morning irritation appears. Vocal strain in children can be quite intense, although they rarely notice it themselves.

Another common reason is dry air. Especially in winter, when heating is on, or in summer after air conditioning. Dry indoor air can make the throat feel rough and irritated, while mouth breathing can also cause throat dryness.

There is also the issue of a runny nose. If the nose is blocked, the child breathes through the mouth more often. And when mucus runs down the back of the throat, it may create irritation or a “lump” sensation — this can also irritate the throat and cause discomfort.

What to check right away

QuestionWhat to pay attention to
How is the child breathing?Any difficulty or unusual breathing
Can the child swallow?Whether they can drink water in small sips
What is the air like in the room?Whether it is dry and whether the room is ventilated
Are there other symptoms?Fever, rash, lethargy, refusal to drink
What happened the day before?Active games, shouting, dry air, runny nose

This small check helps parents avoid panic. Because the phrase “my throat hurts” may describe different sensations in children: scratching, burning, painful swallowing, dryness, or discomfort after sleep.

What to do if a child complains about a sore throat

Start with fluids. There is no need to force the child to drink a lot at once. A few sips more often is better. Drinks should be at a comfortable temperature, not hot. Meals can be softer for the next feeding: porridge, cream soup, yogurt, or warm dishes without spicy seasonings.

For sore throat discomfort, it is generally recommended to drink enough water, eat cool or soft foods, rest, and avoid smoky places. Small children should also not be given hard candies because of the choking risk.

Air out the room. No need to create a draft — simply let fresh air in. If the air at home is too dry, you may consider humidification, but humidifiers should be cleaned regularly. Air humidification may help reduce the effects of dryness indoors.

When specialist consultation is needed

Some signs should not be postponed “until tomorrow.” If the child has difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, unusual drooling, signs of dehydration, rash, blood in saliva, or the condition does not improve within several days or becomes worse, specialist consultation is necessary.

It is better not to take risks here. Especially with small children who cannot clearly explain where it hurts and how much.
